She was soon alone in a strange new place.
She was soon separated from all who spoke the
Danish language. She first went to live with
a family by the name of McCallister at Grandville.
There she undertook to master the English language.
Not satisfied to speak it brokenly as so many did
but determined to speak it correctly. In this she
asked the assistance of the McCallister family, asking
them to correct her every time she misused a word.
Of course they were all to be corrected for a long
time. During the early part of that period her
soul comfort was taken with Hannah. She understood
her and talked her baby talk in her language she was
2 1/2 years old then. That did not last long.
Hannah played with the other children. She
learned rapidly to understand and talk to them.
Soon she would stand and look at her mother
when she spoke. She did not understand. All she
had learned in the mother tongue was soon
forgotten.
