She studied harder. The same courage and faith that had
brought her over the rough trail, caused her to conquer
in this. She never gave up untill she could speak the english language correctly.
In 1859 [1861] she married Clayborn Elder.
She was living with him in Salt Lake City when
the word was received that Johnston's army was coming[1857]
to the city to destroy the mormons. They all
left their homes went south and camped around
Spring Lake. Her husband was left in S.L.C. with
a few other men. Brigham Young instructed these men to scatter
hay and straw in the crops, and set fire to
every thing if the Army came in.
This was not carried out because Johnston's Army
was snowed in between Evanston and Parleys Canyon. They were there all winter.
Soon after this her husband was called to go to
go south to the Dixie country to help colonize that
part of the state. She first lived at what was known
as North Fork in Dixie. While living there her oldest son
then two years old was drowned in a canal that
run in front of the house. Times were hard they had to raise cotton pick it, spin it, and weave the material for cloth, then make it up by hand. She had finished wearing a piece of cloth for a neighbor, who lived a mile away. She left it home with Hannah, while she went to deliver it. She weighed in that she have dinner with them while they were eating. The word was brought to her that Lloyd was drowned. She had to realize that her curly haired darling had been playing too with her when she left home awaited her never cheer her with his sunny smile again.
